SEL

What is "SEL?"

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

SEL programming is based on the understanding that the best learning emerges in the context of supportive relationships that makes learning challenging, engaging and meaningful.

Social and emotional skills are critical to being a good student, citizen and worker. This is best done through effective classroom instruction; student engagement in positive activities in and out of the classroom; and broad parent and community involvement in program planning, implementation and evaluation.

Choose Love

The district is embracing the “Choose Love” Enrichment Program. This program is a PreK-12 social emotional learning program that utilizes character values, positive psychology, mindfulness, emotional intelligence, neuroscience and other tools and skills to help everyone to learn how to “choose love” in any circumstance.  Through the values of courage, gratitude, forgiveness and compassion in action, the students will learn how to become more socially aware, more self-aware, have better self-management, improve their relationships and become more responsible decision makers.

Lindell's Social Emotional Learning Families

Lindell’s social emotional learning families (SELF) are led by a Lindell teacher and consist of no more than twelve students mixed from grades K-5.  This “family” meets monthly to focus and embrace the SEL competency of that month.  Each meeting is full of conversation, meaningful activities, and student centered strategies and techniques are taught. These strategies support student social and emotional growth.  These families “grow” together throughout the students’ years at Lindell. The SELF leaders serve as advisors and mentors to the children in their family.

Lindell Elementary Students Code Their Way to Victory in School-Wide Competition

Innovation, teamwork, and school spirit were on full display at Lindell Elementary School this March, as 4th and 5th grade students kicked off an exciting coding competition that combined creativity with technology.

The event began with the formation of student teams, each consisting of 3–5 members. Teams selected unique names and designed colorful posters to showcase their group identity and enthusiasm. The initiative not only encouraged collaboration but also set the stage for a high-energy academic challenge.

Students first learned the basics of computer programming using the Blockly app, a kid-friendly platform that teaches coding concepts through block-based visual programming. Once they mastered the fundamentals, they transitioned to the “Go” app, where their new skills were put to the test in a series of fast-paced competitions.

The challenge was structured in a bracket-style tournament, with 4th and 5th grade teams competing within their respective grade levels. Winners of each round advanced until only one team remained from each grade. The grand finale took place in the Lindell gymnasium, where the top 4th and 5th grade teams went head-to-head in a thrilling championship round.

This event is more than just a coding challenge, said Lindell Elementary STEM teacher Halle Conklin. It fosters problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork skills the students will carry with them well beyond the classroom.

The Lindell community is proud of all the students who participated, and the school looks forward to continuing to spark a love for STEM education in fun and engaging ways.
