District Overview

District History

Long Beach is a barrier island located on the south shore of Long Island. It is often referred to as the Gold Coast because of its five miles of beautiful, white, sandy beaches. The beaches of Long Beach are considered to be among the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Long Beach is a unique community where you are likely to see a fishing boat as you glance out a classroom window. The schools, the community and the environment are inextricably intertwined. Situated just 45 minutes by railroad from the educational and cultural centers of New York City, and thirty minutes from six major universities, Long Beach is an ideal community in which to live.

Concern for the quality of instruction and the full development of each student's potential has been the concern of the Long Beach schools since the first one-room school, then supervised by the Oceanside district, opened in 1910 in a store near the railroad station. When Long Beach became an incorporated village in 1911, School District #28 was created and the first Board of Education was elected.

In 1922 Long Beach was incorporated as a city, with the schools under municipal administration and the mayor appointing the Board of Education. The independent Long Beach Union Free School District was formed in 1924, and in 1951 it became a City School District.

Long Beach has seven schools servicing a school population of approximately 3500 students. The district consists of one pre-kindergarten school, four elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, and an adult learning center.

Attendance / Registration

Attendance is essential for successful learning. Students who attend school regularly can expect to reach a higher level of achievement. Attendance is also important to the taxpayers and residents because every absence means lost State Aid. When all absences are added up, those lost funds can mean higher school taxes. A child who is ill should not be in school.

There are also other circumstances when absence may be necessary, but every student should attend school every day he or she possibly can. Students are expected to make up work they miss during absence and should communicate with classmates regarding schoolwork. In the event of a prolonged illness, home instruction will be provided.

In case of any illness, parents should call the Health Office in their child’s school on the first day of absence.

State Education Law permits absences from school for the following reasons only:

1. Sickness
2. Sickness or death in family
3. Impassable roads or weather, making travel unsafe
4. Religious observance
5. Religious instruction: I hour per week with parent’s written consent
6. Required presence in court
A note explaining the cause of absence is required on the day the student returns to school. Tardiness may be excused for the above reasons. A written explanation of lateness is required.

Visit Pupil Personnnel Services for more information of immunizations, required health forms, and information about pupil registration.

RELIGIOUS HOLY DAYS WHEN SCHOOL IS IN SESSION

When school is in session on religious holy days, teachers will follow regular class meetings and new work may be introduced. Students are encouraged to make arrangements to obtain homework assignments in advance. No tests will be given on such religious holy days. Students who do not attend school due to religious observance must return with parent’s note explaining the absence.

RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION

Children may be released from school for one hour, one day a week, to attend religious instruction. The instruction must be provided by an organized religious group. Parents must submit written requests signed by them and a representative of the religious group.

Health & Immunization

The School District employs full-time registered nurses in every school building to serve the health needs of all students. School Nurses work with students, staff, and parents for the general improvement of children’s health and to detect deficiencies and/or disease.

Upon entering school, as required by Public Health law 2 164, your child’s immunization records, health history, and current physical status will be reviewed by the Nurse. The Health Office also conducts screening and testing for height, weight, vision, hearing, and scoliosis. After each screening, parents will be contacted if additional follow-up is indicated.
