OBJECTIVE: To expose students to the design cycle and to provide them with meaningful experiences in technological and vocational careers.

The Technology Department offers a course of study designed to give our students the best opportunity to learn the skills needed for a well rounded education to survive in a highly complex and technological society. Our program allows for basic skills and offers some advanced opportunities in selected curriculum areas. In preparation for the 21st century, our students will need to be flexible in their careers and gain transferable knowledge. The success of our program lies in meeting those goals.

COURSES: A wide range of programs are offered at the High School. The Technology Program can fulfill a sequence toward graduation, or be used as electives to enrich the High School experience.

Intro to Computer Science: Coding (1 Credit) This course is designed for students to learn programming and some tenets of computer science. Throughout the course, they will learn about design and computer science. There will be an emphasis on helping students develop logical thinking and problem solving. This will prepare students for IB Computer science if they choose to continue this theme.

Intro to Computer Science: Web Design (1 Credit) The Web Design course is a project-based course that teaches students how to build their own web pages. Students will learn the languages used for website development, and they will create their own live homepages to serve as portfolios of their creations. The course will also cover fundamentals of computer sciences and prepare students for IB Computer Science if they choose to continue this theme.

MATERIALS PROCESSING: WOODWORKING 1 (.5 Credit)

This is a basic course designed to provide students with the opportunity to use hand and power tools to build and shape new articles of wood and/or repair and reconstruct existing wood items.  In the process students will design and plan carefully, use scale drawings, follow procedures, use suitable fasteners, select appropriate assembly methods, and protect and beautify surfaces with proper finishes. Students will also gain a basic understanding of CNC laser engraving and cutting processes.

MATERIALS PROCESSING:  WOODWORKING 2 (.5 Credit).

An advanced course in woodworking designed to build the student’s knowledge of basic woodworking to create a higher-level project.  This course will cover more advanced woodworking machines and tools, techniques in joinery, finish, as well as wood/furniture restoration.  Students will also work together on a Community Project of their own design for the school or Long Beach community itself. Students will become proficient in the use of CNC laser cutting and engraving processes.

DESIGN AND DRAWING FOR PRODUCTION 1 (.5 Credit)

D.D.P. 1 is a one-semester introductory course in the use of drawing instruments and drafting theory.  Specific activities will include the following areas:  Orthographic Projection, Pictorial Drawings and Sections.  Students will have the opportunity to use CADD for product design and innovation. The skills and knowledge acquired will prepare the student for entry into the drawing sequence as well as acquaint him/her with skills necessary for work in wood, metal, auto mechanics, construction, architecture and the engineer sciences.

DESIGN AND DRAWING FOR PRODUCTION 2 (.5 Credit)

An advanced course in woodworking designed to build the student’s knowledge of basic woodworking to create a higher-level project.  This course will cover more advanced woodworking machines and tools, techniques in joinery, finish, as well as wood/furniture restoration.  Students will also work together on a Community Project of their own design for the school or Long Beach community itself. Students will become proficient in the use of CNC laser cutting and engraving processes.

MATERIALS PROCESSING: METALWORKING 1 (.5 Credit) Construct projects of your own choice using sheet metal, casting, forging and wrought iron work.

MATERIALS PROCESSING:  METALWORKING 2 (.5 Credit)  Learn advanced metalworking techniques such as sheet metal fabrication as well as the creation of dies for use in casting, forging and wrought iron work.

MATERIALS DESIGN AND FABRICATION IN METAL (.5 high school credits; 2 Farmingdale State College credits) (Grades 11 and 12 only; Prerequisite: Metalworking 1 and 2)  In this college-level course, operate lathes, drill presses, milling machines and measuring instruments and learn processes such as welding, foundry practices, sheet metal forming, and forging.  Tuition is approximately $50 per Farmingdale State College credit. All students are required to register through Farmingdale State College and are thus responsible for the financial obligation. Tuition assistance (based upon need) may be available through Farmingdale State College.

TELEVISION STUDIO PRODUCTION (1 Credit) Learn creative and technical aspect of  producing a studio television show -   operate equipment such as cameras, sound board, editing software and rotate through all TV production jobs ( director, anchor, on-screen reporter, floor manager, mixer, sound technician, text generator, producer, and camera operator).  Learn the principles of lighting, sound, and video camera.    Create short films, commercials, and PSA's.  Edit videos by using professional editing software on Apple computers.  Write, direct, perform, and produce several short television shows!

TELEVISION STUDIO PRODUCTION 2, 3, & 4: BROADCASTING (THE MORNING SHOW) (1 CREDIT EACH)   Gain more experience in live television production as you work equipment, assume various roles and join the Electronic News Group teams to shoot and edit special feature segments for The Morning Wave news show that broadcasts live to the students and faculty of Long Beach High School as well as the community members of Long Beach.

Television Studio Prod. 2 - Advanced Television Studio Production

Television Studio Prod. 3 - The Morning Wave (Live Broadcast)

Television Studio Prod. 4 - The Morning Wave Internship

IB DESIGN TECHNOLOGY SL 1 (1 Credit)

IB Design Technology aims to develop globally-minded people whose enhanced understanding of design and the design cycle can facilitate our shared guardianship of the planet and create a better world. This project-based course provides students with an exploration of the process and tools used in industrial design including an in-depth look at human factors and ergonomics, CAD, material science, and sustainable design. The purpose of this course is not only to offer knowledge about design and technology, which may change or become outdated, but it is about learning how to adapt to new experiences and approach problems with the appropriate skills and techniques to identify the important elements and to develop the optimum solutions. Individual portfolios will be developed based on class projects. (IB exam and fee requirements)

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN AND DRAWING 1 (1 Credit)
Learn about building materials, construction principles and industry terminology as you build, plan and design structures using zoning and building codes. Draw your own “Dream House”!

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN AND DRAWING 2 & 3  (1 Credit )  Expand upon your “Dream House” with site plans and elevation views using CADD and scale models that can be printed by using a Makerbot 3D printer.
